Tips to Avoiding Frozen Pipes
During the winter season homeowners face the possibility of dealing with pipe problems. Freezing temperatures can cause a serious threat to your property with extensive damage. Thankfully, our Mr. Restoration experts provide tips and tricks to help you better safeguard your home this season.
Tips From Our Experts
1. Insulate Exposed Pipes:
Ensure that pipes in unheated areas such as basements, crawl spaces, and attics are properly insulated. Use foam pipe insulation or heating tape to wrap around exposed pipes, providing an extra layer of protection against the cold.
2. Seal Air Leaks: Inspect your home for any gaps or cracks that could allow cold air to penetrate and reach your pipes. Seal these gaps with caulk or insulation to maintain a warmer environment.
3. Keep a Consistent Temperature: Maintain a consistent temperature in your home, especially during extremely cold weather. Set your thermostat to at least 55°F (12°C) even when you’re away to prevent the temperature from dropping too low.
4. Allow Faucets to Drip: On particularly cold nights, allow faucets connected to vulnerable pipes to drip slowly. The moving water is less likely to freeze, reducing the risk of pipe blockages and bursts.
5. Open Cabinet Doors: Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes, especially those located along exterior walls.
6. Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses: Before winter sets in, disconnect and drain outdoor hoses. Shut off the water supply to outdoor faucets.
7. Insulate Crawl Spaces and Attics: Properly seal and insulate crawl spaces and attics to maintain a warmer temperature throughout your home.
8. Be Mindful of Exterior Wall Pipes: Pipes located near exterior walls are more susceptible to freezing. Pay extra attention to these areas and apply additional insulation or heat tape if necessary.
9. Service Your Heating System: Regularly service your heating system to ensure it’s in good working condition. A well-maintained heating system provides consistent warmth, reducing the likelihood of frozen pipes.
10. Plan for Vacant Homes:
If you plan to be away from home during cold weather, take extra precautions. Turn off the main water supply and consider draining the plumbing system to avoid potential damage.
