Fire Safety at Home
1. Install Smoke Detectors: Place smoke detectors on every level of your home, including bedrooms and hallways. Regularly test the detectors, change the batteries at least once a year, and replace them every ten years to ensure they function effectively.
2. Have a Fire Escape Plan: Develop a comprehensive fire escape plan with all members of your household. Practice fire drills regularly, identifying primary and secondary escape routes.
3. Keep Fire Extinguishers Handy: Place fire extinguishers in key areas of your home, such as the kitchen, garage, and near potential fire hazards. Learn how to use them and regularly check the pressure gauge to ensure they are operational. Make sure all home occupants know the P.A.S.S method.
4. Maintain Electrical Safety: Avoid overloading electrical outlets and use proper indoor or outdoor extension cords sparingly. Use only power strips with short circuit protection. Inspect cords for damage, replace frayed wires, and consider consulting an electrician for an electrical safety inspection.
5. Be Cautious in the Kitchen: Never leave cooking unattended, keep flammable objects away from stovetops, and regularly clean grease from appliances and surfaces. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
6. Practice Safe Candle Use:
If you enjoy using candles, place them in sturdy holders away from flammable materials. Never leave candles burning unattended.
7. Maintain Heating Appliances: Regularly service heating appliances such as furnaces, fireplaces, and wood stoves. Keep flammable materials at a safe distance, and never leave these devices unattended while in use. (This is a reminder to check your furnace filter. )
8. Secure Gas Appliances:
For homes with gas appliances, ensure they are properly installed and regularly serviced by a professional. Install and maintain proper CO2 monitoring devices. Be vigilant for any gas leaks, and familiarize yourself with the smell of natural gas.
9. Store Flammable Materials Safely Outdoors: Keep flammable materials such as gasoline, paints, and cleaning products outdoors and away from heat sources.
10. Install Spark Arresters: If you have a chimney or use a wood-burning stove, install spark arresters to prevent sparks from escaping and igniting nearby flammable materials.
